Kuang Si Waterfall
Discover Luang Prabang's most breathtaking natural wonder
About Kuang Si Waterfall
A Natural Wonder
Kuang Si Falls (also known as Tat Kuang Si) is a three-tiered waterfall about 29 kilometers south of Luang Prabang. The falls begin in shallow pools atop a steep hillside and lead to the main fall with a 60-meter cascade. The water collects in numerous turquoise blue pools as it flows downstream.
Crystal Clear Waters
The striking azure color of the water comes from calcium carbonate, giving the falls their characteristic blue-green hue. The pools are perfect for swimming, with refreshingly cool water even on the hottest days. Wooden walkways and bridges connect the various levels, allowing visitors to explore the entire waterfall system.
More Than Just a Waterfall
The Kuang Si area is also home to the Free the Bears sanctuary, where you can see rescued Asiatic black bears (moon bears). The surrounding jungle offers hiking trails with stunning viewpoints overlooking the falls and the valley beyond. It's a complete nature experience that showcases the natural beauty of Laos.

Seasonal Considerations

Dry Season (November to April)
-
Lower water levels but clearer blue pools, perfect for swimming. Less chance of rain interrupting your visit.

Rainy Season (May to October)
-
Higher water volume creates more dramatic waterfalls, but pools may be less blue due to sediment. Occasional heavy rain.

Time of Day
-
Early morning (8-10am) or late afternoon (3-5pm) for fewer crowds. Midday has the best lighting for photos but is busiest.
